Kenny Miller and Jody Craddock fired Wolves into the fourth round of the Carling Cup and past the brave challenge of Burnley at Molineux.

Miller eased Wolves nerves with a 47th minute strike – his first for the club since their play-off final success against Sheffield United.

The Scottish international was making only his fifth appearance of the season following double hernia surgery in the summer.

Central defender Craddock, a £1.5million summer signing from Sunderland, then put the result beyond doubt with his first goal for the club eight minutes from time.

But Wolves were also indebted to two stunning saves from goalkeeper Michael Oakes as they initially struggled to avoid an upset against First Division Burnley.

Wolves' boss Dave Jones, who made five changes to the side that earned the dramatic 4-3 win over Leicester City last Saturday, said: "It was a case of job done as far as I am concerned.

"The important thing from our point of view was getting through and we did that.

"We got the first goal at the right time and that settled us down." Burnley manager Stan Ternent was proud of his side's display as they slipped to only their second defeat in nine games - but disappointed with the result.

He said: "We played well throughout the game. But I am a little disappointed that we did not get anything from the game.

"We gave away two ridiculous goals and perhaps we need to have a little more belief in ourselves." After weathering an early storm when Paul Ince and Steffen Iversen both went close for Wolves, Burnley proceeded to take the game to their hosts.

It needed a stunning 17th minute save from goalkeeper Michael Oakes to prevent Burnley taking the lead.

Dean West whipped in a right-wing cross that Delroy Facey headed back into the path of Ian Moore. Moore spectacularly volleyed the ball towards goal only to be denied by a one handed save by Oakes.

Facey then fired just over the bar from long range in the 25th minute before Richard Chaplow saw his 20 yard drive whistle just wide.

Wolves rode their luck again after 40 minutes when Facey headed just over the bar after Moore had taken advantage of a slip from Wolves' central defender Paul Butler to cross from the right.

Having survived a Burnley onslaught Wolves could then have broken the deadlock themselves a minute before half-time. But a last ditch challenge from Burnley centre half Arthur Gnohere beat away a close range shot from Kenny Miller after he had been released by his strike partner, Iversen.

But Miller was not to be denied and two minutes into the second-half he made the decisive breakthrough – thanks to the hard work of Senegal international Henri Camara.

Camara won a tussle with Burnley full-back Dean West before racing down the left wing to cross for Miller who bundled the ball home at the far post despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Brian Jensen.

Despite falling behind, Burnley continued to carry a threat and only another impressive save from Oakes - this time beating away a Robbie Blake drive in the 61st minute - preserved Wolves decisive advantage.

Craddock then ended Burnley's hopes of a rescuing the game after 82 minutes when he met a corner from Silas with a powerful header that gave Jensen no chance.
