Wolves roar to three vital points

Last updated : 28 December 2003 By Dave Burgess

Wolves’ season is still very much alive.

Three precious points means safety is just 5 points away, with a game in hand, so Wolves are still in with a chance of avoiding the drop.

However, we once again had to do it the hard way.

Trailing to an early goal from an all too familiar inability to deal with corners, it seemed like it was going to be a grim afternoon for the home faithful.

However, the midfield had a tempo that carried the game to
Leeds and although chances were at a premium we, for once, had a stroke of luck in getting an equaliser.

An amazing miss-sliced corner-kick clearance from Alan Smith looped over everyone, hitting the back post and rebounding into the net. It took the fans a split second to realise just what had happened so bizarre was the goal.

From then on it was an entertaining if low quality affair that always promised more goals due to both defences looking edgy.

Wolves seemed to have more balance with Camara switching to the left wing and
Newton being restored to the right with Kennedy being rightfully dropped. Playing a 4-4-2 formation gave Miller and Iversen a chance to compete against the Leeds defence and as the game wore on the understanding improved.

Cameron and Ince were midfield dynamos covering every blade of grass in an attempt to give Wolves the upper hand and it worked the longer the game went on.

Leeds
, with the exception of Smith, were pretty ordinary looking like a team short on confidence and cohesion. They seemed content to play on the break with Smith and Pennant’s speed being used as an outlet when Leeds played out of defence.

The one-all half time scoreline was a fair reflection of the play and chances.

However, in the second half Wolves got on top and eventually deserved the victory. Camara’s pace and trickery was the key to unhinging
Leeds. However, it was commitment throughout the team to get the victory that has to be applauded.

We simply out battled
Leeds at times. We were on the receiving end of some hefty challenges from various Leeds players which eventually led to Matteo being sent off quite rightly for a second yellow card for a challenge on Naylor.

The vital second goal came from some great work by
Newton just after the break. He took his time to eventually pick out Iversen with a cross and the forward was able to loop the ball over Robinson and in under the bar. The reception took the roof off all four stands.

After that Robinson pulled off a great save from a Miller header and
Leeds didn’t really threaten apart from the odd goalmouth scramble.

However, a last gasp third from Iversen, after an explosive run from Camara whose shot hit the post, was the icing on the cake.

Overall we deserved the win. We battled when needed, played some football on occasion and the formation seemed to help the team understand its own roles.

Leeds
were pretty ordinary but they won’t be too pleased at having lost.

So the season lives on. Being honest we won’t get victories playing like this against the better sides but it’s a lot better being just 5 points from safety rather 8 going into the New Year.

Hope lives on eternal..

Come on the Wolves!
