Is Jones up to the Premiership challenge?

Last updated : 23 November 2003 By Dave Burgess

Well we know that some of the players aren’t Premiership pedigree but what about the manager?

After 13 league games, a third of the season, how is the man in charge standing up to the challenge?

Player signings:

Hampered by serious lack of funding when we reached the Premiership. However, has to be questioned when only 2 of the summer signings are good enough to get in the squad on a regular basis. However, purchasing the likes of Ince, Rae and Miller previously does get him some credit. Overall a bit hit and miss.

Score: 6/10

Tactics:

4-4-2 or 4-5-1. Wide right and left that seems to be as much Jones knows about tactics. If you haven’t got a player who has natural aptitude in that position then play him anyway.

Score: 5/10

Motivation:

Aided admirably by on the pitch generals Ince and Rae. Rarely seen to express anger from the bench or in interviews. Team has become more resilient and the comeback at home to Leicester proves that his half-time team talks do raise something from the players.

Score: 7/10

Team Selection:

Definitely has his favourites regardless of form or ability. Seems to persist with players in positions that they just can’t play in ala Miller wide right. Poor use of substitutes on a regular basis. Everton yesterday was bizarre with Newton, Kennedy and Camara drifting across the pitch with no shape or purpose.

Score: 5/10

Post-match whingeing:

World class!

Score: 10/10

Overall:

Well he has to be given the benefit of the doubt. He got us into this position in the first place which was beyond his predecessors. Known to be working in difficult circumstances but seems to be making some elementary errors in tactics and team selection, especially at away matches. Over reliance on 2 or 3 key players and seems to persist picking players who bring nothing to the team and are carried for the whole ninety minutes.

Score: 6/10
