Dave Jones unveiled tactics never seen before in any match in the history of football.
With no sendings-off, all substitutions available, he contrived to play a ground breaking midfield formation of
Left – Kennedy Centre – Rae Right – Er… no-one
Centre - Cameron
Centre - Andrews
Yes, to the amazement of the 25,000 home fans Jones decided, or told no one, to actually play right of the centre circle. The Coventry left-back could have gone home.
Apparently, the idea was to contain the threat posed by Gary McAllister. Well after eight minutes that was down the pan as well as the player-manager drilled home a low shot past Matt Murray to effectively end the game there and then.
Perhaps, Jones has never heard of or doesn’t believe in the football adage – don’t change a winning team.
OK, Ince had to be replaced but as to why Kevin Cooper also lost his place certainly had me baffled when I saw the team sheet on the chalkboard in the ladbrokes betting office.
Keith Andrews, possibly one of the worst Wolves midfielders in Wolves’ recent 14-year Division 1 campaigns was given the task of marking McAllister.
Well Andrews huffs and puffs a lot but he is Ray Wilkins incarnate (but without any skill).
If he turned one ball back to the defence he turned all of them backwards. The odd ball forward was overhit and he is totally out of his depth at this level. Sure, he may be a product of the currently ‘famed’ Wolves academy but he’s nowhere near the standard of mssrs Lecott and Murray.
However, he wasn’t alone in putting in a totally inept performance. Take your pick from nearly all the starting 11. With the exception of Lescott and Rae and Murray who had nothing to do but pick two goals out of his net the other eight should have their wages docked.
Irwin – wasted crosses, messing about at the back.
Clyde – had little to do but can’t bring the ball forward.
Edworthy – obviously unnerved by being booed on the touchline by Coventry fans.
Cameron – shocking, another one who struggles physically at this level.
Andrews – conference football coming his way.
Kennedy – too slow to get crosses over, disappeared when we needed a big performance.
Miller – ran and tried but not the man to unlock Coventry’s sweeper system.
Cole – too lazy, pull your finger out or go back to Chelsea’s reserves.
What was most noticable for me was that Coventry closed our players down in numbers, Wolves let Coventry hold the ball. Coventry weren’t anything special but they worked hard and finshed two chances superbly.
Wolves have no movement ahead of the ball. All the midfielders and forwards stand on their markers leaving the defence with nowhere to play the ball.
Jones realised after just 50 minutes how pathetic Andrews and the formation was and brought on Cooper but we had lost the tempo of the game and were chasing.
When Partridge swept home the second goal the stands emptied as we could see Wolves weren’t up for a fight from minute 1 so no way were they going to get even a consolation goal.
To come off the rails so badly after such an impressive win against Norwich is baffling.
There is a feeling amongst supporters that if Ince isn’t playing, Wolves aren’t going to win.
There is a real lack of commitment and determination in the majority of the Wolves players, which has deemed them Division 1 and not Premiership standard.
With nearly half the season gone, seventh place could be as good as it gets.
I can’t see anything that separates Wolves from any of the 7 or so teams scrabling for the play-off places with Leicester and Portsmouth already too good for the rest.
