The free agent rejoined his former club on Monday in a deal which will keep him at Goodison Park until the end of the season.
McFadden rejected a similar offer from Molineux in favour of returning to his old stomping ground, where he spent five years between 2003 and 2008.
Speculation has surfaced that Everton tabled a higher bid to tempt the former Birmingham forward back to Merseyside.
But McCarthy has poured cold water on suggestions that McFadden chose the Toffees because of cash, insisting the clubs made identical offers for the Scotsman.
The manager told the Express & Star: "We never lost him - he chose to go to Everton. And as far as I'm aware, there was nothing in it in terms of the finance of the offers.
"He went there purely by choice because he wanted to go to Everton - he was there before.
"They offered him a deal to the end of the season, which was the same as we were offering him."
