Man of the Match: Iwelumo
At the start I am sure most of the crowd thought this was going to be an easy game, but there are no easy games in football unless you played Derby County in the Premiership season. To be fair to Accrington Stanley, they played out their skins and fought every minute of the game, to top it off their keeper pulled off some great saves and it was just not going our way.
Accrington's goals was only conceded by poor defending yet again and in the thick of it was Neil Collins, who I cannot stand to watch once he is on the ball as I feel he will make a mistake.
In total there were 5 players who started for the Plymouth game. This would mean there was a total of 6 changes at the start of the Carling Cup game. So it is almost a totally different squad that we watched play, but I suppose it gives the players who are in the reserves to play some competitive football, to prove they might have a shot at the first team.
One player who certainly stood out for me was Daniel Jones, who is defiantly worth a shot at the first team after his performance in the Carling cup. I would rather see Jarvis and Jones battling it out rather than Stephen Ward who has gone downhill since he played on the wing!
Once the first goal of the game went in for Accrington, I thought this was going to be the Morecambe all over again where we lost the game 3-1 after extra time. When we scored I still felt the same, but we just needed another goal to get us in front. But no it went into extra time when it was 1-1, then towards the end of the first half we scored, bit relieved for about 2 minutes then they got one back to make it 2-2. Once the second half of extra time began it only took 1 minute for us to get back into the lead and keep the lead. We almost won the game in style when Ebanks-Blake was almost one on one with the keeper when an Accrington player come from behind and brought him down on the edge of the penalty area. That player got sent off with red card and they was down to 10 men for the last few minutes of the game but really didn't make much difference as we had won the game 3-2.
There was a fact on the Accrington Stanley site that I found interesting, that the world's first ever penalty kick was awarded on the very same ground with the same two teams competing. The first ever penalty kick was awarded to Wolverhampton Wanderers almost 120 years ago, on 14th September, 1891. The penalty was taken and scored by John Heath and Wolves went on to win 5-0.
