The Wolves winger looked all set to begin a loan spell at the League One side last week only to pick up a hamstring injury during the B'Ham Senir Cup tie at Nuneaaton Borough.
However, Mccarthy has confirmed that he is still looking to send Gobern out on loan when he returns to fitness so that the player can get much-needed full-match practise.
"I spoke to Steve Holland (Crewe first team coach) about Lewis because he said he was after that sort of player," McCarthy told the Birmingham Mail.
"I suggested he go and watch him at Nuneaton but it didn't go any further because of the circumstances. But Lewis needs games, so something like that would definitely be good for him."
