"David Wheater's going back," Wolves boss Mick McCarthy told the club's official website.
"He's not playing in the first team which was the reason why he came down. It was never guaranteed of course but he hasn't been able to get in.
"I spoke to Gareth Southgate and we've got a good relationship with him and Boro and that's what we have agreed.
"He's trained with us and has played in our friendly games so the experience will have done him good and it's not done us any harm either.
"But if he's only going to be playing in the reserves and training he might as well do it up there as here."
