Special Feature - The Hills are alive!

Last updated : 02 September 2008 By Gary Brookhouse

While Wolves were signing Matthew Hill, Stephen Elliott was going in the opposite direction to Preston North End.

Matt is 27 years of age, plays in the left back position and has made over 300 appearances for both Preston and Bristol City. Hill made his career debut for Bristol City against Wolves almost 10 years ago. In 2005 Preston came in for him and brought him for £100,000 in the January window, he then went into the 2006/07 season and got voted by the fans, for Preston's player of the season.

During Matt's career he has only managed to score 6 goals, but those 6 were for Bristol City so that proves he can score somehow. As long as he does a good job at left back, I personally don't care if he doesn't score any goals.

While we are happy that we have a new player, we are also losing one! Stephen Elliott has gone to Preston and I am surprised Mick has let one of his favourites go.

Matt Told the Official Wolves Website and said: "I'm delighted to be here. It's a fresh start for myself and a new challenge at a club which wants to go places.

"Alan Irvine (Preston manager) gave me the option to come and speak to Wolves and I'm obviously glad I've done so and I'm really happy.

"Hopefully I can do well for the club."

Mick McCarthy added that: "Matt is a good and solid left-back who we had watched before we signed George Elokobi.

"When George was injured we made an enquiry to see if Matt was available and got a positive response from Preston.

"He has played over 300 first team games and at 27 is in his prime. He's fit and athletic and, when you consider the age of our squad - will give us that extra bit of experience."

Here are some questions that I asked the Preston Mad to reply to, about Matthew Hill as a Player and how he did for them.

So how was he at Preston?

He always gave his all at left back. He was great in the tackle, always back on the line for last ditch blocks and bombed up and down the wings providing support to the front men. He was player of the season in 2006/7, just for his sheer determination and hard work.

Are you sad to see him leave Preston?

Yes as he was a guy who was loved by the fans, because he gave his all and never complained when things went bad.

Any previous injuries we should be worried about?

No major problems, he has always been one of the fittest players in the squad. He has never been out for any length of time.

Did you see the best of him at Preston?

I think we saw a lot of good times with Matty Hill. Unfortunately due to us having Callum Davidson back, Hill's chances have been restricted. Towards the end Hill sloped off a bit but all in all he had an excellent spell at Deepdale.

Preston Career High?

I think he had several games where he saved us defensively when we could have easily lost. He was always tracking back making last ditch attempts to stop the opposition from scoring.

Preston Career Low?

The fact that he was left out under the old boss Simpson meant he was never given a look in. Also the fact that he would get into some good attacking positions but his shooting was woeful!

Any nicknames?

None of note - just Matty or Hilly.

Any funny anecdotes?

We were one up away at Sunderland clinging on, when Hill was put clean through on a bursting run down the left and all he just had to slip the ball past the keeper, but blasted about a mile wide. Fortunately we managed to hang on and win.

Anything else you want to add?

An absolute top bloke, who will give his all and defensively is a great addition to any side at this level. He has ambition to go to the top level and has the pace to cope but don't rely on him to score too often!
