Guedioura underwent surgery after being troubled by the problem during pre-season, when a visit to the specialist confirmed his worst fears.
It was another blow for the player, who missed the bulk of last season with a broken leg suffered against Aston Villa in September.
McCarthy said: "I'm hoping Adlene will only be six weeks out with his operation. But injuries are part and parcel of football and I'm happy with the squad I've got."
