The Premier League season kicks-off on August 13 and Norwich, promoted as Championship runners-up last season, hit the ground running against their non-league opponents.

Grant Holt scored twice for Norwich and further goals from Zak Whitbread, Korey Smith and Simeon Jackson made it 5-0 at half-time for the Canaries.

Oli Johnson and Aaron Wilbraham completed the scoring after the break for Paul Lambert's men.

Wolves were not so successful in their outing as they slipped to defeat against League Two club Crewe at Gresty Road.

Crewe took a first-half lead through Shaun Miller but Wolves looked to have snatched a draw when Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle netted the equaliser in the 81st minute.

Yet Crewe's Antoni Sarcevic thumping a 25-yard drive into the far top corner with five minutes left to make it a disappointing start for new Wolves defender Roger Johnson.

A strong Stoke City side were held 1-1 at Newport County.

FA Cup finalists Stoke fell behind on the stroke of half-time when home captain Gary Warren sent a looping header into the back of the net, but the visitors equalised late on through a Kenwyne Jones tap-in.

Swansea, promoted via the Championship play-offs last season, had a mixed day after splitting their squad into two for friendlies against Welsh Premier League sides Neath and Port Talbot.

In their first outing Brendan Rodgers' side lost 1-0 to Neath but later in the day they downed Port Talbot 3-1 in a match that saw Ferrie Bodde start his first game in over a year following a knee injury.

Blackburn also played two matches on Saturday, beating Accrington 2-1 and drawing 1-1 against Morecambe.
