The Wolves boss has come under fire from fans via various radio phone-ins and messageboard like Wolvesmad after the abject/pathetic performance when losing 3-1 at Crystal Palace in an FA Cup replay on Tuesday evening.
But McCarthy is more concerned at ensuring survival in the top flight after winning promotion last season, than proving anything to his detractors. And the former Republic Of Ireland boss believes his players should take confidence from their last two league performances, against Liverpool and Hull, which ended in 0-0 and 2-2 draws respectively.
McCarthy said is reported to have said: "It's not about proving people wrong for me. I just want to do it for the club, for me, for the lads here. In my opinion, the club deserves to be in the Premier League for the way it conducts itself in the Premier League and in the city it's in. That in itself doesn't keep anyone in the Premier League, but it's a terrific place and if I stay up on the back of it, then brilliant. But that isn't to prove anyone wrong."
