Hahnemann, part of the USA squad for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, has not officially retired from the international game.
But he has questioned whether at the age of 37 he wants to be part of the squad, with all the travelling involved, if he is not going to play.
Hahnemann recognises that Everton's Tim Howard is the established number one, with Aston Villa's Brad Guzan also in contention.
When asked about his future, Hahnemann said: "I haven't played the last few times I've been called up and travelled.
"You question whether it's worth going at all. So I don't know (about my future). We'll see.
"Do you take yourself out of the running? The way I left it was I told Bob Bradley, 'if you need me, give me a call'.
"If you're playing well for your club then you want to play for your country. It's the next step.
"It's nice not having guys not travelling all over the place.
"Then you get back on the Thursday, train (with your club) on Friday and then it's the game."
Hahnemann added: "Tim has been number one for a while and they've got Brad Guzan (of Aston Villa) coming through who's a good keeper.
"I think they're okay. Like I said, the way left it was 'if you need me, call me' but I was glad we didn't have a game in the last international break and I didn't have to fly back somewhere.
"It was nice to have a rest."
