The Wolves manager believes the backing of supporters will be vital with his side five points adrift of the safety zone in the Barclays Premier League.
But McCarthy will have no problem if there is an adverse reaction should they be unable to deliver a positive outcome against the in-form Black Cats.
He said: "I'm not going to appeal for patience (from fans). There's one thing no-one can ever question about my team and that's the effort and the work they put in.
"I expect and I hope we get good support. Like they expect us to give everything every week, I expect them to give everything to support us every week.
"The fans are vital to the club. In times of trouble, we need their support maybe more than ever. If it doesn't go right, then boo us off, fine. I'm cool with that. I'm more than happy. No problem at all."
