Ok, so Wolves lost 4-1 to Newcastle, Superman Doyle’s out injured, and every week despite our best efforts other results seem to go against us (although for the first time ever I found myself cheering the gobby yob that is Wayne Rooney after his hat-trick against West Ham!). But with everything seeming to knock our Premier League fight, there’s one thing this Wolves side do have, and to quote that hunk Ian Dowie with his whacky made-up words, it’s ‘bouncebackability’.
Now I’m no statto, in fact I hate stats, statements such as “Wolves haven’t won at Villa Park for over 30 years” (how can that even be a stat when for most of those 30 years we barely played at Villa Park?!) Anyway… here are some stats I’ve taken the time to gather. Have a look at these examples where Wolves have evidenced their ‘bouncebackability’ to upset the odds as their Premier League relegation battle ensues:
lost 1-0 to Bolton (the last minute Zubar howler) to then beat Man Utd 2-1
lost 2-0 to West Ham to then beat Chelsea 1-0
lost 2-1 to Wigan to then beat Liverpool 1-0
lost 3-0 to Blackburn to then beat The Blouse 1-0
lost 2-1 to Blackpool to then beat Sunderland 3-2
lost 2-0 to Chelsea and Man Utd 3-2 to then beat Man City 2-1
This is a young side who have grown up together, with the addition of Doyle, Milijas et al, who all fight for each other with the hunger to improve and learn. The 4-1 Newcastle defeat will only drive these loyal players to ensure such failings don’t reoccur this weekend at home to Everton.
There’s no doubt Wolves can bounce back to beat Everton on Saturday, we have nothing to fear as this group of players have the heart, the effort and pride in the shirt they wear to ensure such Magpie shortcomings aren’t immediately evidenced again. Come the end of the weekend, here’s hoping I’ll be adding “lost 4-1 to Newcastle to then beat Everton” to a list of stats that matter.
